Résumé

First and foremost, advanced technology has brought us right in this "network nobody asked for1", as so wonderfully described Spanish journalist Luis Angel Fernández Hermana. We are all part of it now, the proof being that we are all here today. Ten years ago, you may have heard of le Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. Ever since its creation, it has obtained notoriety by being the only Canadian museum solely dedicated to contemporary art. But you were probably not aware of the existence of its Library, which has been open to the public since the beginning. Few of you have visited it, and even less have consulted it. At this very moment you can access it from anywhere, at any time, provided you can lay your hands on a computer. This is nothing exceptional. Thousands of libraries through out the world are experiencing this profound mutation, in an incredible diversity of applications. As for our specific mandate, it is aimed toward researchers in the field of contemporary art history, whether or not they are working within an institution. For the last ten years, La Médiathèque of le Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal has developed some original solutions to provide answers to that very clientele, and for that matter, La Médiathèque could well be seen as an interesting case study.
